Sumner-Bonney Lake honors bus driver Kelly Laurie after regional and state rodeo wins

The Sumner Bonney Lake School District on July 16 recognized its transportation team and honored bus driver Kelly Laurie for winning first place in the transit category at the state school bus safety rodeo and first overall at the regional competition.

"To perform this well so early in her career is a remarkable accomplishment and speaks volumes about Kelly's commitment, professionalism, dedication, and excellence to students' transportation," a district presenter said during the meeting. The presenter said Laurie finished fourth overall out of 23 at the state competition and will represent the district at the international rodeo in Texas next year.

Kelly Laurie, who introduced herself to the board as a mother of two from Dallas, said she took up driving to "make a difference in children's lives" and described competing in the rodeo as a way to extend her late brother's legacy. "Obstacles practiced often definitely make for a better driver," Laurie said, describing months of coaching and practice that led to her results.

Board members and fellow transportation employees applauded the team and the district presented a traveling trophy and flowers to coaches and contributors. District officials said the traveling trophy dates to 1969 and will remain in the district for a year.

The board also discussed livestreaming options so the public could view Laurie's performance at nationals. The recognition came near the start of the July meeting, during a period of announcements and staff appreciation.

The district identified transportation staff and coaches by name at the meeting and thanked staff for their work in student safety and operations.
