Treasurer: general fund 70.39% expended; superintendent warns $147,000 mental-health grant may be in jeopardy

Beatrice Public Schools officials on June 9 told the Board of Education that the district's general fund is about 70.39% expended for the fiscal year and that a $147,000 grant that helps fund a licensed elementary mental-health therapist could be jeopardized by federal funding cuts.
Treasurer Jason reported payroll for May of $1,842,646.62 and bills of $585,831.09, bringing total general fund expenditures to $2,428,477.71. He said the district is roughly three-quarters through the budget year and cautioned that several large expenses remain, including the recently billed turf installment, bleacher maintenance, vehicle purchases, playground work and replacement of multiple computers.
"The general fund is at 70.39% expended," Jason said, adding that the balance will narrow as invoices for these projects arrive.
Administrator Mister Alexander updated the board on facilities and warranty matters: a one-year warranty walkthrough is scheduled with Houseman and BCDM for Wednesday at 10:00 to review outstanding elementary-school warranty items; the district also addressed a sewer blockage caused by a substantial amount of paper towels and expects related repairs and billing to follow.
Alexander said the district received notice that a Stronger Connections competitive grant of $147,000, which supports a licensed mental-health therapist housed at the elementary school, "may be in jeopardy, on the basis of federal cuts." He said the grant covers a two-year commitment; if the award is cut, the district could be required to make up the difference under that agreement.
Other updates included completed projects that will appear in upcoming billing cycles (turf installation, roofing repairs, playground additions and concrete repairs) and recent purchases, including a house on Scott Street (270 Scott Street) that the district acquired.
The board was notified of upcoming meetings: a committee of the whole on June 23, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. and the next regular meeting on July 14, 2025 at 6 p.m., both in the Administration Building.
The board did not take additional action on the grant during the meeting; administration said it will monitor the funding notice and report back to the board if the situation changes.
