The Summerville Town Council voted to approve a contract to upgrade the town’s public safety computer-aided dispatch and records-management systems and to add a drone-first-responder module.
Chief presenters described a multi-year financing schedule and reimbursement plan for hardware and software. The chief said the immediate net cost to the town in the first year would be approximately $317,432 after planned reimbursements and use of 9‑1‑1 funds; the purchase also locks pricing and maintenance for a multi‑year period.
The chief told council the town had not fully refreshed dispatch and RMS equipment in nearly 29 years and that Motorola had agreed to include additional evidentiary and integration modules in the deal to support investigative workloads. The chief said the upgrade also creates opportunities for closer interoperability with county partners’ systems.
Council members asked about life expectancy, 9‑1‑1 funding caps and ongoing maintenance costs; staff said the pricing is locked for six years and that some hardware costs are reimbursable under existing programs. Council approved the purchase on a voice vote.
What happens next: Staff will finalize contracting and schedule phased implementation, with reimbursement and usage of 9‑1‑1 funds reflected in future budget reports.
