Avery County approves property purchase, accepts donated campers and delays reappraisal

Commissioners adopted a resolution to accept four campers donated by Murphy County and approved a lease agreement to allow Volunteer Avery (administered by Ruth Shirley) to place the campers with hurricane victims. The board adopted the measure by voice vote.
County staff also reported two tax-foreclosure lots — one on Florida Avenue in Lemo Falls and one at Butte at Cranberry — and the board declared them surplus and authorized pursuing a real-estate listing with a broker after previous upset-bid attempts produced no buyers.
Separately, the board approved a resolution delaying the next general reappraisal of real property from Jan. 1, 2026, to Jan. 1, 2027, citing storm impacts to property values; the resolution sets a three-year cycle to 2030 before resuming a four-year reappraisal cycle.
What happens next: Staff will finalize purchase documents, implement the camper lease program through Volunteer Avery, list surplus lots for sale, and adopt the revised reappraisal schedule administratively.
