Amber Horstman asked the board to abate the parcels and explained that she and her husband purchased the land in 2022, suffered serious medical setbacks, and could not produce immediate copies of the application paperwork. Horstman said she believed the application had been submitted but the records could not be located.
County staff confirmed the parcels meet acreage and receipt requirements for ag classification and recommended the board determine how many prior years to abate; commissioners discussed whether to go back one, two or three years. The board approved a three-year abatement.
The chair called for the vote; the motion carried. Staff noted that returning tax dollars may affect school-district levies through the tax distribution process but that the levy mechanism would compensate school districts as required by state law.
