Princeton commissioners voted on Sept. 8 to raise the town's water capacity fee for new construction to $25, a change staff said will take effect immediately to cover higher county bulk rates and a recent town purchase of capacity.
Town staff told the board that Johnston County will begin charging a bulk capacity rate of $19.24 on Nov. 1 and recommended Princeton set its own new‑construction fee at $25 to avoid repeated increases. "We just purchased 30,000 gallons of capacity for $405,000," a staff member said, citing a recent capital purchase the town made to secure water capacity. Staff said the proposed change affects new development only and does not change charges for existing residents or renters.
After debate about alternate figures (commissioners discussed $22.50 and other midpoints), a commissioner moved to set the fee at $25 with an effective date of the next business day; another commissioner seconded the motion. The chair called the vote and announced the motion carried 4–0.
The board instructed staff to implement the change in the town's fee schedule and to notify developers; staff said many local builders had already been warned that county charges were increasing and that developers typically pass such costs on to buyers.
