Board approves two innovative English courses as part of South Carolina Pathways Project

The board approved two innovative course applications—English I, “Entrepreneur’s Voice,” and English II, “Fiscally Literate Voice”—as components of a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway developed under the federally funded South Carolina Pathways Project. Staff recommended approval and will submit the applications to the South Carolina Department of Education for final authorization.
Susan explained the district is one of five participating districts in the federally funded grant aimed at enhancing postsecondary outcomes for students with disabilities while designing pathways that can benefit all students. She said the district has committed to designing a CTE pathway to a diploma and that High Point Academy is the first district school scheduled to implement the courses pending state approval.
Trustees asked whether the project is limited to students with IEPs; Susan said the grant requires certain outcomes for students with IEPs but the pathway is a general‑education initiative that will include students without IEPs. She said staff plan to submit the applications to the state department by the end of next week and expected a roughly 30‑day review; High Point Academy is ready to implement in the fall but can delay to the second semester if required.
The board moved, seconded and approved staff recommendation to adopt the two innovative course sequence applications with permission to make nonmaterial changes.
