The Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board voted unanimously on two legal actions taken during Tuesday’s meeting: to authorize district attorneys to dismiss specified state-court litigation and refile in federal court, and to approve a settlement in Stoker v. Scottsdale Unified School District.
President Donna Lewis moved to authorize the attorneys to dismiss and refile the California action; the board approved the motion by voice vote. The board then moved to approve the settlement in Stoker v. Scottsdale Unified School District; that motion also passed unanimously.
The board had convened an executive session under Arizona law to obtain legal advice and provide direction on litigation strategy, including discussion of a separate matter described in the session as Scottsdale Unified School District v. Meta Platforms, Inc., concerning alleged adolescent-adaptation and product-liability issues. President Lewis introduced the executive-session motion under ARS §38-431.03(A)(3) and (A)(4).
No members of the public addressed the board on the settlement during open session, and the motions that produced the authorizations and settlement approvals were entered on the record as unanimous voice votes. The board did not provide further public legal particulars during the meeting minutes beyond the motions and outcomes.
The board reconvened its regular session immediately after the executive session and completed the recorded votes. The meeting then moved on to the scheduled presentations and strategic-plan discussion.
