A representative of the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce read a letter during public comment to clarify the chamber’s policy on selling tickets after local concerns were raised about ticket sales for a political fundraiser.
Larry, speaking for the chamber, said the organization provides "ticketing and promotional support as a service to both our nonprofit and for-profit member organizations" and stated that "providing the service does not imply endorsement of any group's mission or views." Larry said the chamber receives no portion of ticket proceeds and that offering the service is not an expression of political support. He added the chamber’s board will review the policy at its August meeting and that the chamber is committed to correcting misinformation.
In the same public-comment period, resident and new-business owner Sherry Edwards introduced a wine and gourmet snacks shop with an event space in town. Edwards said the business will host wine tastings and community events, and she invited residents to a ribbon cutting on Aug. 15 and a grand opening on Aug. 16. She said the business will also offer picnic baskets, antiques and classes such as art and bingo for seniors.
Board response and next steps
The chair thanked Larry for the clarification. Commissioners welcomed Edwards’ announcement and asked for location details; Edwards provided a street number and nearby landmarks. The board expressed appreciation for community engagement and encouraged residents to attend the grand opening events.
Context
The chamber statement was offered as public comment and not as a formal county action. The board recorded the clarification and noted the chamber’s intent to review policy internally.
