Commissioners honor EMS retirees; staff provide updates on elections, transit and soil & water

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners recognized EMS retirees Ken Smith and Bonnie Pruitt and heard departmental updates from elections, transit and soil & water leaders at the Aug. 18 meeting.
Sherry Dawson, director of the Board of Elections, described increased list maintenance after litigation-related registry repairs, said she reduced problem registrations from 73 to 35 that now require state intervention, and reviewed candidate-filing timelines (December filing opens for sheriff, clerk of court, board of education seats and county commissioner seats). "We purge all of our records that have net retention ... we bring them to our office and shred them ourselves," Dawson said of routine maintenance.
Melissa Rector, transit director, reported that Alleghany in Motion passed a state compliance review with no findings, is now fully staffed, and received regional recognition: "We received, along with all the Western counties of North Carolina, the transit academy or transit system of the year award." She praised front-line drivers and office staff for keeping services running.
Eric Hamilton, soil & water director, summarized education programs and technical contracts (about $75,000 in cost-share work for farmers), and described planned stream-restoration and stormwater projects including a roughly $1 million stream-restoration project expected to start in February of next year.
The board thanked retiring EMS staff and departmental presenters; no formal board action was required on these informational reports.
