Board hears state graduation overhaul, district plans financial literacy pilot

She said the state has signaled a phased implementation: the 2024 ninth-grade cohort would receive a single diploma in 2028 and assessment requirements will be phased out beginning with the 2027 cohort, but precise credit definitions and timelines remain to be clarified.
As one concrete next step, the district reported it had hired a business teacher and purchased curriculum materials from Ramsey Solutions to pilot a full-year financial literacy elective in 2025–26. Administrators said the course is an elective in the pilot year; the state has identified financial literacy instruction as part of graduation requirements to be taught in 2026–27 but has not yet specified which student cohort will be required to take it.
Board members asked whether climate instruction and special-education pathways are clearly defined under the state changes; presenters said those matters remain under discussion at the state level and district officials are monitoring forthcoming guidance. Dr. Christie noted that the Portrait of a Graduate centers culturally responsive and sustaining education and that state rubrics are expected to guide local instructional shifts.
The board received the report and asked the administration to keep the board updated as state guidance is issued.
