Johnson City Schools project updates: secure vestibules progressing; Town Acres bids received

Johnson City Schools facilities director Brian Ross updated the school board on ongoing facility projects, saying secure vestibule work at Mountain View, Cherokee and Northside elementary schools is "progressing relatively well" but facing procurement challenges, particularly for bullet-resistant glazing.
"Contractually, they are supposed to be done by the end of the calendar year," Ross said, adding that Market Street School demolition crews began work this past weekend and that Town Acres construction bids were received the same day and will require time for purchasing and architect review.
Ross estimated that installing all desired features at Town Acres could run about 5 to 10 percent over the current budget but said there was "some wiggle room" to adjust scope. When a board member asked about upgrading the Science Hill concession stand and roller pavilion, Ross said funding is the primary barrier and noted that the project is largely a city administration funding question.
Board members asked for future follow-up on funding sources and regional enrollment trends while discussing project timelines. No formal votes were taken on facility contracting at the meeting; Ross said the district's purchasing department and architects will certify bid packages before the board receives contract details.
