Council weighs cuts to community grants as budget gap looms

Hot Springs — As the council examined the 2026 budget shortfall, members reviewed requests from community organizations and debated whether to reduce those contributions to help close the gap.

Misty presented a staff proposal that reduced SHEDCO’s requested allocation from $20,000 to $10,000; the Boys & Girls Club asked for $20,000 but staff proposed $10,000 in the draft budget. Some councilors argued for prioritizing economic development spending that draws investment and housing, while others said it would be fiscally irresponsible to add allocations when the city is starting the budget process with a six-figure deficit.

Jacqueline, the city administrator, urged council to retain a $5,000 line for the Historic Preservation Commission, saying the commission’s work "isn't just about saving old buildings. It's about protecting the cultural identity and history that makes Hot Springs unique." Supporters noted the potential to leverage small city allocations into larger grant matches; opponents asked for postponing discretionary grants until the deficit is reduced.

The council deferred several funding decisions to the next meeting so members could examine trade-offs and consult with department heads and community representatives.
