District presents textbook-adoption plans: 5 Ponds Press recommended for K–8 history, math pilots underway

The school district’s academic services team gave the board an overview of textbook adoptions and curriculum resource plans under updated state timelines. Staff said changes to Virginia’s adoption schedule since the pandemic mean multiple subjects are under review and the district is preparing materials displays and feedback windows for community review.
For K–8 history, staff recommended 5 Ponds Press as the preferred direction based on alignment to the 2023 standards and the availability of rich teacher resources; administrators said physical textbooks will be provided for elementary and middle‑school students alongside digital teacher resources. For high‑school history, staff said state instructional guides are still being finalized and that fewer publisher options make high‑school adoptions more complicated.
Mathematics adoptions are in progress: secondary teachers are piloting Mathspace while elementary candidates have been narrowed to Kiddom and STEMScopes. The curriculum adoption committee plans public displays of sample materials, teacher previews, and a QR‑code survey to solicit feedback from parents, teachers and community members before making formal recommendations to the board.
Staff emphasized they will use teacher feedback as a primary input and that final recommendations will be presented after community and teacher review during the summer.
