CTA, Cook County to place naloxone vending machines at five rail stations under partnership

Denise Barreto, CTA chief equity and engagement officer, presented a license agreement with the Cook County Health and Hospital System to install naloxone vending machines at five rail stations across four lines, as part of a partnership that includes the Chicago Recovery Alliance and Cook County Department of Public Health.
Barreto said the machines will dispense naloxone (Narcan), the opioid-overdose reversal medication, and will be accompanied by periodic on-site office hours from Chicago Recovery Alliance staff to assure supply replenishment and community engagement. The five stations selected were chosen based on overdose and public-health data from Chicago and Cook County public-health authorities; staff said selection, access, and procurement feasibility guided final placement.
Board members emphasized the importance of partner staffing, maintenance and reliability after prior machines had experienced downtime; staff said the partnership addresses those risks and the agreement includes terms for procurement, replenishment and indemnification arrangements. The board placed the item on the omnibus and recommended it for board approval.
