The superintendent reported recent staffing changes and resignations: Ty Cothern (after‑school program) is stepping back, Crystal Gregory resigned as high‑school volleyball coach, Paige McKinney resigned as girls basketball coach, Cynthia Holt stepped down as a cook for health reasons, and Abby Johnson is moving into a school nursing role at the elementary school. Officials said they are actively recruiting teaching candidates and have attended job fairs; teacher‑salary adjustments approved on the consent agenda were noted as helpful for retention.
Enrollment was described as broadly stable year‑over‑year, with district‑level shifts: about 16 fewer elementary students, about three fewer middle‑school students and about 16 more at the high school compared with the same point last year. Leaders said they will use those trends when preparing next year’s budget.
On safety, the district hosted an announced review by Tennessee education and safety officials who praised the district’s security practices, including security vestibules and the presence of an SRO. A drug‑detection dog search turned up one vape; staff said appropriate disciplinary steps will follow.
Program updates included summer learning camp planned for June for rising kindergarten through eighth graders (about 165 signed up so far, near last year’s 168), and a proposed conversion of a biology lab to support a possible LPN program if an external grant applied for by Jonathan Smallwood is awarded. Officials said the district will budget for initial conversion work and move forward if and when grant money is received.
Operational reminders included that report cards will be released on Tuesday, April 8; TCAP testing is scheduled April 14–May 2; and the FAFSA window closes April 15. Board members asked for continued updates on FAFSA completion and senior guidance work.
The superintendent also updated the board on facility work: two remaining elementary‑roof leaks were addressed and retainage will be paid once satisfied; the field house project faces soil compaction issues after heavy rain and contractors and architects are coordinating remediation, with officials emphasizing they will not compromise the structure’s integrity.
