Commission OKs 10-foot utility easement for hotel transformer and reviews Turkey Trot logistics

City staff presented and the Pittsburg City Commission approved a request Sept. 23 for a 10-foot utility easement on city-owned south-lot property to accommodate replacement and relocation of hotel transformers required by Evergy.
A city staff member (Matt) explained the easement would affect the first row of parking stalls on the north side of the building and would not change the main drive lane. Commissioners asked whether the affected stalls are public parking and how transformers will be protected; staff confirmed the stalls are public and said protections and details are specified in the easement and contractor plans. The commission approved the easement on a motion moved by Chuck and seconded by Doc.
Separately, the commission received a logistics briefing for the annual Turkey Trot event. Lieutenant Cuppett (police liaison) and event organizers described the downtown route (400 block North Broadway, portions of 4th Street), planned street closures and cooperation with streets, fire and county deputies, and business outreach. The event aims to raise $25,000 for the child advocacy center and to attract about 1,000 participants; last year had 793 participants. Staff noted volunteers from police, fire and county departments and that event setup and trash services are coordinated citywide.
Commissioners praised staff for the planning and confirmed staff will continue operational coordination for the easement and the event.
