The Garden City Council voted Aug. 11 to approve a tentative fiscal year 2026 budget for all funds totaling $31,449,021.
The mayor reminded council members that the budget is tentative and eligible for amendment at the Aug. 25 meeting but that the total amount cannot be increased after adoption of the tentative budget. During discussion a council member raised a question about utility rate changes, saying they believed a water sanitation increase of 53.5% appeared in the materials; staff responded that the overall sewer increase will be 10% and that staff will continue to examine sewer rates across residential and commercial customers.
Council members expressed appreciation for prior fiscal management and for maintaining a relatively large fund balance amid uncertain economic conditions; the council approved the tentative budget by roll call.
The tentative budget approval allows the city to proceed to the public budget hearing and any permitted line-item adjustments before the final adoption process.
