Columbus council recommends liquor license, appoints new sergeant, approves downtown lighting plan and advances fireworks-penalty ordinance

Public hearing — liquor license: The council heard an application for a retail Class D liquor license from Tienda e Panaderia Suarez LLC for premises at 1709 23rd Street, with Javier Suarez Maldonado listed as manager. Angelica Palacios, who identified herself as manager of Tandem Panaderia Suarez, spoke in favor of the application. After closing the hearing, the council voted to recommend approval to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission; the transcript notes that the state commission, not the city, grants the license.
Appointments and personnel: The council approved the mayor’s appointment of Chuck Sliva to the employee retirement committee for a two-year term (the two-week waiting period for this internal committee appointment was waived). A speaker identified as Jean (representing the BID) explained the BID has set aside funds and received an anonymous $25,000 donation toward the project to improve evening lighting, safety and events downtown.
Ordinance introduced on fireworks enforcement: Council introduced Ordinance 25-14 (first reading), which would amend Columbus City Code, ch. 133, sec. 133.99, to add a $100 penalty for discharge of fireworks in violation of city code. The item was presented on first reading; two additional readings are required before final adoption.
