Chester County Board approves districtwide science textbook adoption

The Chester County Board of Education voted to adopt a new set of science textbooks across all grade spans during its regular meeting.

Unidentified Speaker 1 presented the recommendation and asked Unidentified Speaker 4, who led district work with the adoption committee, to summarize the group’s work. Unidentified Speaker 4 said the committee, overseen by Melanie Peel, recommended materials from a single publisher for all grades to create consistency in vocabulary and instructional themes. "It's my recommendation that that the board approve that," Unidentified Speaker 4 said.

Unidentified Speaker 3 moved to approve the recommendation and Unidentified Speaker 2 seconded the motion. The board approved the textbook selection by voice vote with no recorded roll-call tally provided in the meeting record.

District staff said the single-publisher approach is intended to make it easier to align science instruction with existing elementary English language arts materials and middle school curricula, and to build on preliminary gains in science instruction. The adoption had been discussed in a prior work session and came to the full board after review by a teacher committee.

The board did not specify a publisher or contract details during the public portion of the meeting; staff indicated the adoption follows regular committee procedures and that further procurement steps will proceed as required.
