Cheatham County commissioners adopted a resolution on Sept. 15 authorizing county‑paid health insurance for employees who retire after 30 years of continuous service, with clarifying language about eligibility when retirees have access to other employer coverage.
Mayor McCarver introduced the resolution and staff presented two alternatives: one that would render retirees ineligible for the county program if they are "eligible" for other employer‑provided insurance regardless of whether they accept it, and a second that would make retirees ineligible only if they are actually covered by other insurance. Commissioners debated implications for law‑enforcement retirees and those with military or VA coverage. Staff proposed language to ensure certain retired‑service‑member coverage would not be treated as employer‑provided insurance for the purposes of the county program.
After discussion and direction to county counsel to draft clarifying language, the commission approved the measure by roll call, 12 yes, 0 no. Commissioners emphasized the intent to make the benefit available without creating excessive burdens or overly restrictive reporting requirements for eligible retirees.
The resolution will be drafted into final language reflecting the agreed exception for retired‑service‑member coverage and returned as the formal ordinance or resolution documentation for administrative implementation.
