Special education advisory committee flags attendance and outreach needs; CLAC plans virtual options and training

Miss Hebert, representing the district’s Special Education Local Advisory Committee (CLAC), told the Bristol Warren Regional School Committee that improving attendance and family engagement remains a priority for the coming year. She said CLAC will keep a virtual meeting option, explore childcare supports, and hold outreach events at school open houses and PTO meetings.
"One of the biggest challenges that we've seen is getting attendance," Miss Hebert said, describing plans to repeat virtual meeting options and to try new approaches to the committee’s 'glows and grows' reporting so schools share progress more consistently.
Miss Hebert said CLAC hopes to offer special educator awards next school year and encouraged the district to support teacher assistants to become registered behavior technicians. She also mentioned efforts to expand mental‑health training districtwide. Committee members thanked CLAC for picking up work that had previously gone dormant and urged persistence as momentum builds.
Committee members asked clarifying questions about CLAC’s calendar and how it would communicate with families, and suggested monitoring attendance and outreach results over time. The committee did not make a formal decision tied to the report but expressed support for the planned outreach and training efforts. The committee also welcomed CLAC’s intention to attend as many school events and PTOs as possible to raise awareness and recruit participation.
Next steps: CLAC and staff will continue outreach, hold some meetings virtually next year, and return updates on attendance and engagement as appropriate.
