Caddo Parish honors student leader, music teacher and eight Purple Star schools

Danila Thompson, a fifth grader at University Elementary, stepped forward Sept. 16 after being named the September 2025 Caddo Parish student leader of the month. "I am very excited to be chosen as the September 2025 Caddo Parish student leader of the month," Danila told the board, listing academic and extracurricular accomplishments including honors-list recognition and competitive cheer.
The executive committee also spotlighted AC Steer music teacher Allison Humphrey Smith and a group of fifth graders who performed a Kenyan greeting song. Board presenter Mary Nash Woods said Humphrey Smith has been "selected for the prestigious recognition because of her extraordinary impact on students," noting she was a Quaver Music national ambassador and a quarterfinalist for the 2026 Grammy Music Educator Award.
Superintendent Kenny Burton and staff then announced that, following a district resolution earlier this year, eight additional campuses had earned the Purple Star designation for work supporting military-connected students and their families. Superintendent Burton invited military partners from Barksdale Air Force Base to join the recognition; Victor Monero, the district high-school director and military liaison, led the application effort.
The board called principals from CE Byrd High School, Caddo Magnet, Captain Shreve High School, Eden Gardens Fundamental Elementary, Fairfield Elementary Magnet, Northwood High School, South Highlands Elementary Magnet, and Yuri Drive Middle AP Magnet to the stage for a group photo to mark the honor.
No formal action was taken on the recognitions beyond the presentations. The board moved on to committee reports and the regular agenda after the ceremony.
