Boerne ISD reports strong early-grade gains and preliminary STAAR outcomes

District instructional leaders told the board that Boerne ISD surpassed its K–2 universal screener goal (reported at 82%) and that preliminary STAAR results for grades 3–5 show high approaches/meets/masters percentages, while some middle-grade declines were noted and will be addressed.
Boerne ISD presented end-of-year universal screener and preliminary STAAR results to the Board of Trustees on June 16, reporting several areas of strong performance alongside areas for focused improvement.
Director of Instruction Miss Flores said combined K—through—2 universal screener results for reading and math exceeded the district goal of 80%, reporting 82% of students at or above benchmark in the early grades. She noted kindergarten growth (84% to 87%), first-grade gains (78% to 83%) and a steady second-grade result (80%) on the NWEA MAP measures of academic progress, which adjust cut scores each testing window.
For preliminary STAAR outcomes, Flores summarized campus-level results (combined English and Spanish): third-grade math showed 87% approaches, 68% meets and 35% masters; fourth-grade math was 85% approaches, 66% meets and 44% masters; and fifth-grade math recorded 88% approaches, 64% meets and 32% masters. Reading results for grades 3——8 were similarly strong, with third through fifth grades showing approaches in the low 90s and solid meets/masters percentages.
Flores and trustees discussed a predictable dip in seventh-grade mathematics that stems from course-sequencing changes (advanced fifth-grade students take an accelerated sequence that shifts assessment populations in subsequent years). Trustees asked about interventions; Flores recommended ensuring strong teacher assignments and curriculum alignment, and noted attendance and continuity as key factors for success in algebra and other credit-bearing courses.
The district noted that final accountability ratings and CCMR (college, career and military readiness) results will be released by TEA on August 15, and staff will return to the August board meeting with final STAAR and accountability data.
