District staff presented an update on the Agua Fria Union High School District’s strategic plan focus on social and emotional wellness and the use of the Character Strong curriculum to deliver tiered interventions.
Sasha Lacey, representing the ESS department and the district leadership cadre, told the board the item tied to Strategic Plan Goal 4A centers on building systems that teach and support social and emotional skills. Lacey described a multi-tiered model: Tier 1 delivers universal, grade-specific lessons during advisory to all students; Tier 2 provides individualized strategies and small-group instruction for students who need additional supports identified through data-driven team conversations.
Lacey outlined the structured process used by academy teams to identify students, match supports and monitor progress. She said student support specialists deliver lessons, build relationships and adjust interventions based on progress monitoring. The presentation included an example of a student who participated in Tier 2 small-group work and reported a stronger sense of belonging.
The presenter described Character Strong as evidence-based and multi-tiered, combining curriculum and professional learning to support classroom instruction, behavior improvement and student mental health. Lacey closed by inviting board questions; none were raised during the session.
The board accepted the update and moved on to other agenda items.
