Council says $250,000 Commerce grant will fund feasibility study of county’s 70-acre parcel

Council leadership told Marion County officials that a consultant has been engaged to study the future of a 70-acre county-owned parcel with Commerce grant support.
Speaker 4, who introduced the update, said the county engaged Restoration 52, led by Melanie Brown, after receiving a $250,000 grant from the state Commerce department to fund a feasibility study of the property for mixed-use housing, workforce housing and rental development. The purpose of the study is to determine what development types and land-use designations are best suited to the site and to identify potential stakeholders for later engagement.
"This is all being done that $250,000 grant that we received from Commerce to do a feasibility study," Speaker 4 said. He added that the consultant team met with local economic-development staff and other stakeholders and that the study timeline is approximately three months, with a projected completion around November.
Speaker 4 said planning will include surrounding land-use considerations (industrial park, entertainment district and general development designations were cited) so the county can coordinate smart growth. He also said the consultant will brief council later and that staff provided a preliminary list of potential stakeholders.
No final development decisions or funding commitments for construction were made at the meeting; the action is at the study and planning stage. Council members were told they will be engaged as the study progresses and as stakeholder outreach begins.
