Local coalition outlines October Domestic Violence Awareness Month events and victim services

Miss Rogers, representing the PD Coalition Against Domestic Assault, told the Marion County council about a slate of events planned for October to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month and emphasized the availability of victim services.
Miss Rogers said the coalition is holding a family, friends and fun day with a 3-on-3 basketball tournament that will benefit victims’ services, and named other county events including appearances at Brinkley Home Health, a Raccoon Festival and a trauma-awareness program in Mullins. She invited Marion County residents to attend and said proceeds, sponsorships and donations from those events will support services for victims.
"We have a 24 hour hotline, our shelter... our emergency safe shelter," Miss Rogers said, noting that the coalition provides immediate assistance to people trying to leave dangerous situations. She referenced local outreach and a calendar of events intended to inform residents about available services.
Miss Rogers also recounted that, after a recent local death, community members said they did not know where to seek help; she said the coalition’s events are designed to ensure residents know about the services and resources that exist. She closed by asking whether there were questions and received brief thanks from council members for the presentation.
The council did not take any binding action at the meeting on funding or program changes; Miss Rogers said informational materials and an event flyer were distributed to council members.
