Minden Elementary leaders outline programs to reverse multi-year declines in test scores

Minden Elementary School administrators presented a detailed update to the Douglas County School District Board about academic performance, attendance and site-level improvement strategies.
Principal Andrew Fromdahl and Assistant Principal Molly Ravenscroft said Minden currently carries a Nevada School Performance Framework one-star rating and reported declines on last year's SBAC state assessments (ELA reported at 38.4% proficiency; math at about 33%). Fromdahl told trustees the school has focused this year on targeted interventions, a newly expanded Win Time schedule for grade-level intervention, and "Minden Mondays" (a choice-based explorations model) to boost engagement.
Fromdahl summarized enrollment and attendance trends: enrollment was cited at 375 students (historical high about 382) and average daily attendance at 94.4% as of the presentation. He described class-size challenges and "grade-level ripples" resulting from fluctuating cohort sizes and noted chronic absenteeism remains a concern.
Trustees pressed for comparative historical data to understand whether test-score drops correlate with changes in grading/reporting systems and the district's EPIC instructional model. Trustee Marcus Zinkie asked for prior-year SBAC numbers and for staff to examine whether gradebook standards and proficiency measures align with the state assessments. Fromdahl said the school convened a student-performance strategies subcommittee and will provide more detailed historical comparisons.
The principals also asked the board to consider a districtwide playground-improvement funding strategy; they said several campuses use aging equipment in need of replacement.
Board members thanked the students who joined the presentation and asked for follow-up reports showing results from Win Time, MAP/SBAC correlations and progress on attendance interventions.
