Board approves housing for Possible Dream adult high school at College and Career Center

The board approved a motion June 19 to house the Possible Dream Foundations adult high-school program at the Edcouch-Elsa College and Career Center.
Dr. King, identified in the meeting as the founder and chairman of the Possible Dream Foundation, told trustees the program would operate like a charter-style high school offering a high school diploma (not a GED) to adults up to age 50, with three daily shift options to accommodate working adults. He said the state will hold the program to five metrics: enrollment goals, graduation rates, industry-based certifications or transition to higher education, employment outcomes and wage improvements. Dr. King also described potential partnerships with the district and South Texas College and asked for district support including possible facility housing.
Trustees voted to approve housing the program at the College and Career Center (motion by Mister Rosano; seconded by Mister Torres). The board noted that housing the program would not give it taxing authority or facility funds; the program will rely on state funding and grants, partnerships, and possible equipment funding.
Dr. King said the program aims to expand regional adult-education capacity and to refer 18—26 year-olds back to the districts existing programs while focusing the Possible Dream model primarily on adults ages 26 to 50.
Next steps: district staff will coordinate logistics for the programs use of the College and Career Center and partners will pursue grants and equipment funding as needed.
