Derry Area SD board appoints Alicia Longwell to fill director vacancy

Longwell introduced herself to the board as “a parent in the district” and “an associate professor at CCAC for the surgical technology program,” saying she was motivated to serve so “every student has a chance and feels supported and challenged no matter who they are and where they start from.” Board members questioned her availability for regular meetings and committee work; Longwell confirmed she can attend the district’s first- and third-Thursday schedule and said she was interested in athletics and finance committees and has a personal interest in special education because her son receives support.
Missus Fendish nominated Longwell for the open director seat. The board moved to close nominations and then voted on a motion to appoint Longwell to the unexpired term beginning June 3, 2025, and ending Dec. 4, 2025. The appointment motion was moved and seconded (Campbell and Reid are referenced as mover and seconder in the record) and approved by voice vote; members present voiced agreement and the chair declared the motion carries. Eight members were recorded as present at roll call.
Mister Cribbs administered the oath of office. During the oath Longwell repeated the pledge: “I do solemnly swear that I will support, obey, and defend the Constitution of the United States and the constitution of this commonwealth, and I will discharge the duties of my office with fidelity.” After the swearing-in, board members said they would provide a nameplate, share contact information, and update the district website; the board noted that posting contact information is required under the Pennsylvania School Code.
Board members welcomed Longwell and encouraged her to ask questions and participate in orientation and committee briefings; the chair and other members said the district would provide an orientation covering recent budgets and governing policies. A visitor later announced that the intermediate unit (IU) board meeting canceled last week had been rescheduled for July 7 at 7 p.m. The special meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn.
