The Charleston County Board of Education voted unanimously to select four applicants for interviews in its search for a new director of schools and authorized staff to arrange interview dates and times.
Unidentified Speaker 2, a board member, formally moved that the board interview "Jennifer Cochran, Misty Swindle, James/Benjamin Johnson, and Tracy Abraham" for the open director position; a second was made and the motion passed unanimously after members responded "aye." The board instructed Dr. Satterfield (referred to in discussion) to contact candidates and set interview logistics.
The board settled on a tentative interview week of Sept. 8–12, with a 5:00 p.m. start time for candidates' presentations, and discussed flexibility if a candidate cannot make an assigned slot. Members agreed candidates should be allowed to present first, followed by questions from each board member in turn, with limited follow-ups to ensure equitable opportunity to ask questions.
Board members discussed ranking the finalists during an upcoming public work session so the board can proceed to hire without restarting the search if their top choice declines. Unidentified Speaker 1 said the board would rank candidates (A–D) and then, at a later public meeting, would make a hiring motion and begin contract negotiations; contract language will be sent to legal counsel (referred to as Deborah in discussion) for formal preparation.
Members also agreed staff would notify applicants who were not chosen for interviews. The board discussed logistics — including whether to hold multiple interviews in one evening or spread them over several days — and emphasized giving candidates sufficient time to present prepared materials. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn.
The board did not record a roll-call vote count in the transcript; the public record shows the motion passed "unanimously" as announced at the meeting. Next procedural steps are interviews the week of Sept. 8–12, a work session to review and rank candidates, and then a formal hiring motion and contract negotiation at a future public meeting.
