Mayor, council praise Pumpkin Fest; council adopts memorial resolution for Al Wilkerson

Mayor and DDA Director Jerry Frayer described the weekend as "a great weekend" with large crowds, full vendor areas and strong volunteer support. Frayer singled out public-works staff, food-truck vendors and behind-the-scenes sponsors for help staging the festival.
Councilwoman Abdo requested the memorial resolution for Al Wilkerson, and described his role in the schools: "He was the first coach to take our basketball team to a state championship," she said, and noted that students, teachers and community members attended a packed memorial. The resolution passed unanimously. Councilwoman Talley, the mayor and other members offered personal memories and urged donations to the Romulus Community Schools athletic and scholarship fund in lieu of flowers, per the obituary cited at the meeting.
Council members also used the communications portion of the meeting to announce community programming: Miss Roscoe highlighted that the Ramos Athletic Center will resume "Kids Night Out" on first Fridays beginning in October with registration pricing and a schedule through May; Unity Day honored three "Hometown Heroes" — Judith Puritan, Johnny Williams and Geralyn Burcroft.
The memorial resolution and community announcements proceed alongside council business; no further action is required to memorialize Wilkerson beyond the adopted resolution, and event licensing and park use are handled through separate council motions recorded earlier in the meeting.
