Board hears integrated guidance grants update and new literacy investments

Summary
District staff reported on integrated guidance grants supporting early intervention, CTE, dual credit and a newly awarded comprehensive literacy grant; leadership said the district spent grant funds on tutoring, college tuition and updated K–3 intervention curriculums.
District staff briefed the board on the suite of state grants grouped under the state's "integrated guidance" umbrella and on a newly awarded comprehensive literacy grant.
Jody explained that the integrated guidance grouping includes early intervention, high school success and student investment funds and that the district uses those dollars to expand college-credit access, CTE certifications and targeted student supports. "We paid, I think, 40 or $50,000 last year just in tuition for kids, for college," Jody said when describing last year's college credit tuition payments.
Staff described local programs supported by the grants: a Latinos in Action program that provides exposure to college credit and mentoring; regular mentoring/tutoring sessions; comprehensive professional development for teachers on the science of reading; and restorative-practices initiatives intended to improve attendance and student relationships. Christie Swan was identified as overseeing literacy programs and instructional coaches.
Early literacy funding was described as focused on K–3 intervention. Staff said the district purchased updated, evidence-based intervention curriculums for early grades and was recently awarded a comprehensive literacy grant that covers pre-K through 12, which could allow the district to spread evidence-based practices more broadly. Speakers noted that some reporting data are still embargoed by the state, which limits current public disclosure of certain outcome measures.
Board members asked about long-term funding stability; presenters cautioned that some grant lines are specific in allowable uses and cannot be freely reallocated. Staff said they are monitoring state guidance and will use allowable supplanting or supplantation where permitted. The presentation included a briefing on student supports (restorative practices, link crew, community-building circles and SEL curriculum Wayfinder) intended to boost engagement and graduation rates.
District leaders said they're continuing to pull and review detailed outcome data and will report results and any recommended changes back to the board when state embargoes are lifted.
The board did not take formal votes tied specifically to these grant programs at the meeting; the briefing served to inform board oversight and future budget planning.
