Mehlville presents Success Ready Students Network update; alternative APR data not published by DESE

Brian Smith, Mehlville R-IX assistant superintendent of academics, briefed the board Aug. 21 on the district's work with the Success Ready Students Network (SRSN), a network that emphasizes competency-based learning and alternative accountability metrics.
Smith described the network as a grassroots collaboration of more than 100 organizations and schools promoting personalized, competency-based approaches. He said the district uses iReady benchmarking in grades 3–8 for English language arts and mathematics and that the SRSN incorporates multiple indicators into an alternative APR, including ICAP completion and a combined approach to proficiency measurement.
On publication of results, Smith said, "those initial 20 districts, if you were to go look for their APR scores starting in 2024, you will not find them. They do share that information with us as a district." He said the State Board of Education will ultimately decide whether the alternative-APR results are published and that Mehlville has requested public posting of those results.
Smith also said the network is piloting an alternative assessment this year with five districts and that DESE is leading a longer-term plan to reshape the assessment system over several years. Board members asked about reporting changes prompted by Senate Bill 68; Smith said SB68 currently affects reporting mechanisms rather than imposing additional district requirements.
No board action was required for the presentation; Smith said district SRSN materials and indicators are available on the district website under Curriculum > SRSN.
