The Johnson City Schools board voted to approve Budget Amendment #3, a financial adjustment that the district says will start Chromebook replacements and fund temporary staff positions while directing remaining dollars to capital needs.
Miss Leah Veil presented the financial report for the month ending Jan. 31: revenues totaled $10,369,000 and expenses $8,175,000, producing a net increase of $1,131,000 in the general purpose fund through January. Veil said Johnson City Schools has received $433,000 in TISA fast-growth funds through January and expects another $258,000 in March; the district will reassess allocations in May and June when final payments are determined.
On teacher compensation, Veil reported an update from the Tennessee Department of Education indicating a planned $2,000 teacher bonus to be included in the FY26 budget, with the state covering the bonus plus associated employer costs (Social Security, Medicare and Tennessee Consolidated School contributions). Veil provided a rough district projection of about $1.3–$1.4 million to cover funded positions identified under state guidance, and estimated roughly $2.5 million to extend the $2,000 bonus to all staff at full amounts.
Budget Amendment #3 increases both revenues and expenditures by $883,000, funded in part by the $433,000 TISA fast-growth funds and $450,000 in TISA outcome funds. The amendment was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. The presentation noted an ambiguous transcript figure for the Chromebook replacement line (appearing as '2 750000 dollars'); the board accepted Veil’s summary that the amendment is budget-neutral regarding the fund balance and that the Chromebook replacement effort must begin this year to have devices ready for the next school year.
Next steps: staff will begin Chromebook procurement and finalize allocation of the TISA outcome funds at upcoming budget meetings; the board will incorporate updated TDOE guidance on teacher bonus eligibility when it becomes final.
