Edgecombe County commissioners approve fees, personnel changes, contracts and grants; public hearings scheduled

At its July meeting, the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners approved a range of administrative and routine items including fee changes, personnel actions, contracts and grant acceptances.
Planning & Inspections: The board approved proposed fee schedule updates after staff presented comparative tables with surrounding counties. Commissioners discussed proportional service-level expectations tied to fee increases before approving the changes by voice vote.
Financing public hearing: Staff requested, and the board approved, calling a public hearing on August 4 to consider financing a list of capital projects; the solicitation for bidding from lenders has responses due July 22.
Human Services bylaws and EMS position: The board approved minor clarifications and formatting updates to Human Services bylaws. It also approved a new EMS training-officer job description, repurposing a currently budgeted position (grade EO6A) with no additional funding required.
Law enforcement items: The board approved a statutory transfer of a retiring deputy’s service weapon to Captain Joseph Cofield at a price of $1, following a Sheriff Atkinson request.
Grants and contracts: The board accepted a Governor’s Highway Safety Program grant to fund a full-time deputy for traffic-safety duties (positions to be absorbed over a four-year period) and approved a set of contracts and an added waterline-extension contract for Eagles Road funded by an NCDEQ grant.
Appointments and other business: A slate of appointments and reappointments to county boards and commissions was approved by a single motion. The board also approved a capital project ordinance for the North Edgecombe School of Innovation (see separate article) and moved into a closed session to discuss personnel and economic-development matters.
