Shelton — The Shelton Planning & Zoning Commission approved multiple sign permits for businesses on Bridgeport Avenue during its Sept. 10 meeting and set conditions intended to limit nighttime illumination and preserve neighborhood character.
The commission approved sign application 25‑40 (Angela Maione, 713–719 Bridgeport Ave) and 25‑43 (MJ’s Ammo Saloon, 514 Bridgeport Ave) on unanimous votes after zoning subcommittee recommendations that the proposals met size and style requirements.
At 99 Bridgeport Ave, the commission approved a revised sign for Miles Energy (application 25‑44) with a subcommittee recommendation to remove promotional copy such as “Snack Smart.” Representatives for the sign vendor confirmed they had additional renderings and that the lower portion of the sign could be replaced with vinyl to allow future changes without structural alteration.
Crave House (application 25‑46) prompted the longest discussion. Applicant Vincent Perez described the business as a breakfast/lunch eatery open roughly 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. while acknowledging business hours might shift seasonally; the signage included a second, smaller line describing the offering. Commissioners expressed concern that labeling the business explicitly as “breakfast and lunch” could limit future hours and suggested a more general term such as “eatery” or “restaurant.” The sign vendor (Menar Baker) said the bottom portion would be replaceable vinyl, and the vendor offered to produce an updated rendering.
To address resident concerns about nighttime light, the commission approved the Crave House sign with the condition that exterior illumination be controlled so it is only on during business hours (the motion adopted hours of 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. as guidance) and that staff receive an updated rendering showing the revised second line. The vendor also offered a dual‑switch arrangement to illuminate the primary name while keeping the descriptive lower line unlit when desired.
All sign motions passed by unanimous votes recorded in the meeting. The commission directed staff to receive updated renderings from applicants and to verify lighting specifications before permits are issued.
