Committee to meet only when multiple applicants; youth commission described as informal

During the Jan. 6 meeting, staff reported little change in pending applications and said Chair Chris Miller requested the committee meet only when more than one person needs interviewing to avoid single-applicant sessions. "Chris requested that we meet only when there's more than 1 person to be interviewed," staff said, adding that staff would email members before scheduling.
Councilor Vanessa Campos and others cautioned that waiting for multiple applicants could delay filling vacancies that have persisted. Campos asked how the committee would avoid undue delay; staff said they would gauge applicants’ willingness to wait and stay in contact. The committee discussed that some boards meet only quarterly or irregularly, which could influence scheduling decisions.
Members also raised the Youth Commission’s activity level. Councilor Wesley Butler said the youth commissioners often organize outside formal meetings — using a group chat to coordinate cleanups and downtown event participation — though several vacancies remain and some members miss formal meetings because of time conflicts. Committee members said informal engagement can be constructive but agreed to monitor vacancies and formal meeting attendance.
Staff said there are no immediate interview dates scheduled and the committee likely will not meet again until February unless more applicants arrive.
