Carteret County approves NCDOT/FTA grant submissions to fund transit operations and vehicles

The Carteret County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 15 approved submission of grant applications to the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration to fund the county’s CCATS public transit program for fiscal year 2027.
Patrick, the transit presenter, told commissioners the applications cover routine operations and administrative funding, vehicle purchases, service for the Downeast Express and funding for the traveler’s aid program. He described the proposals as “the usual grants that we do” and invited questions from the board.
With no members of the public speaking during the hearing, Vice Chairman Mansfield moved to approve submitting the grant applications, specifically referencing grant numbers 5310, 5311 and 5312 plus traveler’s aid funding, and to authorize the county manager to sign the required documents. Commissioner Moore seconded the motion and the board approved it by voice vote.
County staff said the grant package includes funding lines commonly used to maintain and expand local transit service; detailed budgets and grant applications will be handled by the county manager’s office as part of the submission. No public testimony opposed or altered the package during the hearing.
Next steps: staff will finalize and submit the grant documents to NCDOT and FTA and return to the board with any required follow-up or acceptance notices once the agencies act on the applications.
