Council approves Phase 2 road resurfacing IGA with Cherokee County to use new state funds

Council voted on July 17 to approve an amendment to the Phase 2 road-resurfacing intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with Cherokee County so the city can use additional state funds and begin paving before school starts.
Miss Penley, public works staff, said the city received roughly $460,105.93 in additional state funds and re-issued a request for proposals with partner jurisdictions. Nine bids were received; the low bidder for the additional roads was South Georgia Paving. Penley read the list of roads proposed for this phase and summarized bid results. Because bids came in lower than expected on the initial list, the amendment would add multiple street segments to this phase. Penley said the incremental overage between extra grant funds and the proposed amendment was $48,688.90 and asked council to act immediately because the paving contractor planned to start work the coming Friday so projects could be completed before the school year.
A council member moved to approve the Phase 2 road-resurfacing IGA amendment; the motion was seconded and passed with all members voting in favor. Council and staff emphasized that if the city did not spend the additional funds it would forfeit them.
Votes and outcome: the IGA amendment to add streets and accept the low bidder (South Georgia Paving) was approved unanimously on July 17.
