Auburn School Committee approves student & family handbook and multiple committee policies

The Auburn School Committee voted Sept. 3 to approve the Auburn School Department student and family handbook and to advance or approve several policy items during new business.

Chair Pamela Albert moved through items sequentially. The committee approved the district student and family handbook as part of its annual review; Chair Albert noted the move last year to a single districtwide handbook rather than separate school handbooks. "This we moved to having 1 student and family handbook for the entire district last year, moving away from having, like, individual school handbooks," she said.

The committee also approved or moved forward on the following items by voice vote: AUB CHCAA student handbook for first reading, AUBBE school committee meetings policy for first reading (with language corrected to reflect actual meeting-date practice), AUBBBAB school committee self-evaluation policy for first reading, and the school committee self-evaluation tool which the committee will distribute via Google survey and review in a public workshop.

Where comments were recorded, members asked that contact lists be updated if personnel change mid-year; the superintendent confirmed the handbook will be updated as needed. Most votes were called as "all those in favor" and recorded as "Motion carries" with no roll-call tallies provided in the transcript.

What’s next: policies slated for first reading will return as appropriate for further readings where required; the self-evaluation will be administered and results collated for public workshop review.
