Albany honors longtime Public Works leader Chris Bailey at council meeting

Councilors, staff and community partners used the Sept. 24 meeting to honor Chris Bailey for more than two decades of service to Albany.

Speakers recounted Bailey’s career path — from temporary staff and water-department work orders to roles including community outreach coordinator, water quality supervisor, airport and transit manager, operations manager, and director of public works. Councilors described Bailey as a source of institutional knowledge who led the city’s largest department, oversaw projects from stormwater to wastewater and transit, and provided mentorship and continuity for elected officials and staff. One councilor said, "It's been my distinct pleasure to work with you for 8 years," and the mayor presented a ceremonial key on behalf of the city and council.

Multiple speakers praised Bailey’s role during significant city projects and crises, including COVID-19 response, capital projects, and street-maintenance work. Chris Bailey acknowledged the recognition and accepted thanks from council and staff. The recognition portion was presented near the start of the meeting and followed by regular agenda business.
