Chambersburg honors bus driver with 45 years of service; PSBA names district a "Great Pennsylvania School"

The Chambersburg Area School District board opened its August meeting by honoring a longtime employee described in the meeting as having roughly 45 years of school-bus service.

Board members and colleagues described the honoree, identified in the meeting as Sue Bumble, as a constant presence who has transported multiple generations of students in the district. One presenter said the district will place a permanent dedication in the administration building to recognize her service.

Megan Oreck, chief membership officer of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, presented a separate recognition to the district, calling Chambersburg a “great Pennsylvania school.” Oreck praised the district’s curriculum, extracurricular activities, emergency-preparedness efforts and attention to student mental health. She also praised the district’s budgeting and audit practices and brought a banner and small promotional items for district use.

Oreck said the honor highlights work that “drives student engagement” and gives the district an opportunity to promote public-education excellence in the community. Board members gathered for a photo with the banner and thanked Oreck and staff who organized the recognition.

The meeting included short tributes from colleagues describing the honoree’s knowledge of local routes, regularity in difficult weather and relationships with students and families. The board noted the district will display a permanent marker in the administration lobby alongside prior service honorees.

The recognition and tributes concluded with members thanking staff and the community for supporting the district’s personnel and student programs.
