Catawba board approves software, curriculum materials and multiple facility projects

Administration said academic facilitators evaluated vendors and recommended RTI-StorED; funding will come from state 'at-risk' funds. - I-Ready math toolkit: The board approved purchase of the I-Ready math toolkit for K'8 from Curriculum Associates using state textbook funds. Nine of 16 elementary schools had requested the supplemental resource; staff said anecdotal teacher reports showed positive results but districtwide outcome data were not yet compiled.
Facilities and capital projects - Charles H. Tuttle Elementary intercom replacement: The board approved a Veil Communications quote for $55,772.01 to replace the intercom system. - Rear parking lot repaving at St. Stephen's Elementary: The apparent low bidder Hickory Paving and Striping was selected at $97,500. - Balls Creek Elementary preschool renovations: A change directive totaling $28,364.78 was approved to address interior patches, ceiling work, asbestos panel replacement and related items in phase 1 and 2 of the pre-K hallway project. - HVAC and contingency adjustments: The board approved a $19,134.15 contingency adjustment for Claremont Elementary HVAC work and approved additional change directives related to Maiden Middle HVAC, with administrators saying funds remain to complete the project.
All purchases and change orders were described by Operations staff Dan Moore or instructional staff Lee Miller and were approved by motions and unanimous votes among members present. Board members asked a few clarifying questions about data supporting instructional purchases and about project details but did not delay approvals.
