Board approves $1,500 startup allowance for new high‑school ice‑fishing club

The Saint Croix School District board voted to approve a $1,500 startup allowance for a proposed high‑school ice‑fishing club on Sept. 17, following a presentation by staff and students.

Fourth‑grade teacher Peyton Dackel, high‑school social‑studies teacher Zach Feneri and student Damian outlined plans for practices, tournaments and safety. They asked the board to fund initial purchases — an ice auger, tip‑ups, basic tackle and some coach stipends — estimating roughly $1,500 to start. They said they have applied for a WIFA grant that could provide up to $500 toward startup costs and that community sponsorships and fundraising could cover additional needs.

The presenters described logistics for transportation, saying the club would use a school van and trailer for gear and that adults would drive but vehicles would not go onto the ice. The proposed schedule includes two in‑school meetings and on‑ice outings, with a tentative practice on Jan. 18 and regional and state events later in the winter season.

Board member Dave moved to approve the funding; Derek seconded. A voice vote indicated the motion carried. During the floor discussion a board member clarified the motion was for a $1,500 district allowance for the 2025–26 season. The presenters and several board members noted the program’s potential to engage students who do not participate in winter sports.

The club organizers said they would pursue the small grant, seek sponsors and report back to the board on any changes to costs or logistics.

The board did not attach additional conditions beyond the funding approval; the matter will move forward under the school’s extracurricular oversight.
