Scottsdale Unified highlights summer meal partnership, staff awards and student scholarship

Scottsdale Unified School District on Aug. 5 praised a summer feeding partnership and recognized staff achievements and a student national-merit scholar. Superintendent Scott Menzel introduced Patty Bilbrey, director of nutrition services, who described a summer non-congregate pick-up operation hosted at Scottsdale Community College that the district said served "just shy of 135,000 meals to more than 9,600 students," with costs fully reimbursed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.
"That's not a typo. That's a mountain of meal kits and a whole lot of applesauce," Bilbrey said, thanking campus police and SCC staff for traffic control and safety and calling the program a "lifeline" for families who sometimes drove more than an hour to access meals. Bilbrey credited the partnership with Scottsdale Community College and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community for enabling the operation.
Superintendent Menzel also recognized district professional-learning leaders: Stacy Pascual for organizing "Teachella," a summer institute that drew more than 400 teachers, and Michelle Irvin for coordinating the three-day "Leaderpalooza" event. Menzel announced the finance department received the Government Finance Officers Association certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting (noted in the meeting as the district's 33rd year winning the award) and that the communications team earned a National School Public Relations Association Gold Medallion.
The board also recognized Ari Schott of Arcadia High School as a National Merit scholarship recipient. In remarks about operations, Menzel thanked facilities and transportation teams for responses to record heat and said the district will continue efforts to address transportation contractor challenges.
The board did not take formal action on the recognitions; they were presented as ceremonial and informational items.
The district announced future meeting dates, including a special governing-board meeting on Aug. 19.
