Commissioners back PCC sublease to support Zachary/Duke hiring center
Summary
After presentations by PCC and Zachary representatives, the board authorized staff to proceed with a sublease of South Campus space to support a Zachary/Duke hiring center, which Zachary said could support about 1,000 hires over the life of the project.
Piedmont Community College and Zachary representatives told Person County commissioners on Sept. 15 that a South Campus sublease could create a recruitment and training hub for jobs tied to Zachary and Duke Energy projects.
Dr. Kevin Lee, president of Piedmont Community College, said the college seeks to sublease roughly 5,000–6,000 square feet of its South Campus to facilitate a partnership with Zachary and Duke that would build a hiring pipeline for students. "Through this partnership, Zachary will be hiring approximately 1,000 workers," Lee said. PCC trustees and staff voiced support during the informal comment period.
Russ Horton, Zachary's project director for Person County, said construction on the nearby project was starting and described staffing needs: "Peak shows 6,625 craft, but we'll actually if we have both projects going, it'll probably be closer to 800 people out there." Commissioners discussed lease terms and agreed staff should proceed with negotiations. A motion to approve proceeding with the sublease request passed by voice vote.
