Town of Florence outlines after-school program, summer events in presentation to Florence Unified board
Summary
Town of Florence recreation superintendent and coordinator described the Discovery Club before/after-school program, intersession and summer offerings, teen programming, volunteer and employment opportunities, and upcoming community events for families.
Bridal Nacke, recreation superintendent for the Town of Florence, and Kyle Wright, recreation coordinator, presented an overview of the community services department and its recreation division to the Florence Unified School District governing board on March 11.
Nacke said the department provides recreational, social, cultural and educational programs for all ages and highlighted coordination with the district. Wright described Discovery Club, a before- and after-school program serving kindergarten through eighth grade at Anthem K–8 and Florence K–8, with before-school hours from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and after-school from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., plus full-day intersession and summer programs and extended half-day hours. He said the town is hiring lifeguards and offering a junior guard program, and that the aquatic center reopens May 24.
The presenters described teen programming (a seven-member teen council, teen nights and a recent carnival-night partnership with Florence High School student council that drew about 63 teens), special-interest classes (Pilates, Zumba, martial arts), facility rentals for events and ongoing volunteer opportunities for high school students to earn required hours. They also listed upcoming events including Road to Country Thunder (April 5), an Extravaganza egg hunt and pancake breakfast (April 12), Tween & Teen Extreme Night (April 25), and FreedomFest (July 4).
The presentation emphasized partnership opportunities with district schools for programming and volunteer engagement; board members thanked the presenters and offered no further action during the meeting.
