Board appoints Leslie McShane to fill trustee vacancy

The Missoula County Public Schools Board of Trustees voted to appoint Leslie McShane to a vacant trustee seat during its July 15 meeting, seating her immediately.
Trustees interviewed two applicants for the vacancy, Leslie McShane and Rod Sharkey. In her interview, McShane said she values public education and would bring community voice and time to the role, noting that trustees must work on budgeting, policy and outreach. Rod Sharkey described 12 years of experience as a trustee in School District No. 4 (Hellgate Elementary) and said he knows feeder-school issues and master-schedule concerns.
After the interviews, Trustee Walsh moved to appoint McShane; Trustee Walsh seconded. During the roll call, Trustees Mercer, Walsh, Hayes, Old Person and Vice Chair Walker Andrews voted in favor; Trustee Wake opposed. The motion passed and Chair Old Person welcomed Trustee McShane to the board.
The appointment follows the board'established interview process for filling vacancies and will remain in effect until the next applicable election or appointment action outlined by district policy. Trustees thanked both applicants for applying and noted the difficulty of selecting among candidates.
The board moved on to regular business following the seating. The clerk, Denise Williams, handled the administrative steps to seat the new trustee.
