Parents urge consistent discipline after alleged death threat, vaping suspension in Florence High cheer program

"A death threat is not just a violation of rules. It's a serious and potentially life threatening act," the parent said during the public-comment period, adding she has pursued the issue through district channels for 47 days and has "a whole packet of every single document proof" she has provided to district officials.
The parent said the district superintendent told her the death threat was not addressed in the athletic handbook and questioned why there appear to be "5 different handbooks with inconsistent codes of conduct," particularly for cases that endanger students. She urged the board to adopt clear, consistent standards so consequences match the severity of conduct.
Other parents and community members spoke after her, praising coaches and the cheer program while urging the district to distinguish bullying from ordinary conflict. "Bullying is a repeated intentional act designed to harm, intimidate, or control another person," said Janine Candelaria, who identified herself as a longtime Florence community member and former educator. "Doing so minimizes real bullying cases and can create unnecessary division within teams and communities."
Parent Nicole Veil (as introduced at the meeting) described long-term family ties to the program and credited coaches with teaching accountability and character. Arthur Neil and Lindsay Anderson also spoke in support of coaches and student opportunities in the program, while acknowledging tensions in the community.
Board members did not take final action on discipline at the meeting. The unidentified parent said she would leave a packet of documentation with the board at the meeting's end.
The board heard the comments as part of a standard call to the public; chair noted board members are not permitted to discuss or take legal action on matters not noticed on the agenda but may ask staff to review a matter or request it be put on a future agenda. No motion was made in response to the discipline complaints during the meeting.
